I WAS casting my mind back to 2017, when an American diplomat suggested that Ivanka Trump’s distress over alleged gas attacks in Syria had ‘significant influence’ on US airstrikes. Professional nutcase, Alex Jones, on the other hand, had adopted a similar approach and claimed that Trump attacked Syria ‘because Jared and Ivanka told him to’ and that this makes them ‘enemies of the republic’. So the International Zionists who pull Trump’s strings weren’t responsible for bombing Syria, after all, it was all down to his own daughter and son-in-law.

In other words, we were seriously expected to believe that American politics resembles a cross between an episode of Dallas and one of those inane wrestling programmes where someone’s wife jumps into the ring and batters his opponent senseless with a can of hairspray. I did wonder if Ivanka would put in a special request to bomb South Africa, too, so that she could get her hands on a few diamonds. Whilst it remains to be seen whether somebody will finally shoot ‘J.R.’, properly this time, the soap opera continues.
