The flying car has been a running joke about the future since at least The Jetsons, but for $249 you can now rent the LIFT Hexa for a joyride. It’s one of a new generation of electric aircraft that, like a supersize drone, can take off and land vertically from a spot no bigger than a parking space. When Jeff Wise started looking into these flying cars a few months ago, he noticed something surprising: They are not entirely legal. You won’t get pulled over while hovering above the ground, but the FAA has some rules that Silicon Valley types have creatively interpreted.
