How the Birds in My Yard Became Internet Stars

You have probably never read a story like David Pogue’s charming account of the family of finches that lived above his porch. It’s a fascinating case of something completely mundane — a small common bird laid some eggs — becoming high drama with big emotional stakes on social media. The saga began when David decided to set up a video camera and share clips and photos of the birds with his large Facebook following. Soon, the finches had names and personalities, and thousands of people were anxiously following the fate of the four eggs in the nest and the hatchlings as they emerged. There were moments of tragedy and triumph for the family (at least as viewed in human terms), and along the way, David tried to make sense of just how involved he and many others on social media felt in the birds’ lives.
