This Is the Year of MILF Cinema

The year 2024 has already seen four movies revolving around older women in hot pursuit of younger men: Anne Hathaway’s The Idea of You, Nicole Kidman’s A Family Affair, Carol Kane’s Between the Temples, and Léa Drucker’s Last Summer. We’re set to get at least two more this year — another from Kidman (Babygirl) and one starring Laura Dern (Lonely Planet) — with a third likely to hit in 2025 (Olivia Wilde’s I Want Your Sex). MILF movies are not new, but they are newly interested in subverting ancient age-gap-relationship tropes with horny moms who are actually Empowered Protagonists. Rachel Handler spent hours immersing herself in the treasures and traps of New MILF cinema to explain what novel (or not) romantic fantasy is being sold to us.
