People everywhere are asking if degrowth is the only realistic way to counter climate change. But how would that happen? Would people lose their jobs and be impoverished in the US and across the world? Or would it be the only way for poor countries to free themselves from overdeveloped ones? Degrowth means (1) increasing necessities in the poor world while (2) decreasing unnecessary production in the rich world. What are necessities? What is useless and destructive production? How can we teach children to appreciate people more than things? What does it mean to ration “embodied fossil fuels?”
