STORY OF THE DAY

The struggle to specialise for young doctors in SA

By Tamsin Metelerkamp

Young doctors seeking to specialise have reported that there are ‘waiting lists to work for free’ in South Africa’s public health system, as accessing registrar training posts becomes increasingly difficult.

WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING

🇺🇸🚫 Matt Gaetz, Donald Trump’s minor sex trafficking-accused pick for Attorney General, has dropped his bid. Gaetz faced blistering opposition from both Republicans and Democrats, which ultimately proved too much for the AG-in-waiting.
🇺🇸⚖️ … instead, Pam Bondi, former Florida attorney General, will be running the Justice Department. Bondi has long defended Trump and argued that his many investigations were politically tainted. Perfect for the administration, in other words.
🇳🇱🇮🇱 The Dutch foreign minister’s trip to Israel has been cancelled. Caspar Veldkamp made the announcement shortly after the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence minister Yoav Gallant. Hamas leader  Mohammed Deif was also included in the warrants for alleged war crimes.
🇦🇺⛳ Play has been abandoned at the Australian PGA Championship for today, as heavy rains flooded the Royal Queensland course in Brisbane. Almost 250mm of rainfall has fallen since last Friday, reducing the tournament to 54 holes, forcing everything to halt until 6am on Saturday, hopefully.
