How Media Erases Palestinian Humanity

Episode 158 with Owen Jones

On KK&F this week, we’ve got prominent left-wing journalist Owen Jones with us to talk about media framing of Israel’s genocide in Gaza, Palestinian journalism that accurately covers the atrocities of Israel’s war machine, and much more. Watch below:

It’s impossible for many mainstream media outlets to truly, fully ignore over a hundred days of all-out genocide in Palestine. (Many have, in fairness, done their best.) But Owen points out the linguistic and rhetorical tactics these outlets often use to further the dehumanization of Palestinians killed by Israeli violence. Compare (as Owen does) phrases like “indiscriminate violence” applied to Hamas’s actions with those used to carefully obscure Israeli responsibility for tens of thousands of Palestinian deaths. The events of October 7th that claimed Israeli lives have been describe as “massacre” and “slaughter,” but rarely if at all are these same terms used by legacy outlets to capture the total destruction of Gaza and seemingly countless violations of human rights that the IOF has perpetrated there.

We delve into this analysis of media coverage of Israel-Palestine because the terms used to report atrocities in Palestine, obscuring key information about Israeli aggression and massive Palestinian loss of life, enter (and ultimately dominate) the broader discourse of our political landscape, creating ignorance and complicity in the West that only abets the genocide. What can we do about it? We hope you’ll enjoy this thoughtful conversation with Owen, which you can listen to tomorrow as a podcast on Spotify, Pandora, Apple Podcasts, and more.
