The Real Lives of Transgender Kids and Their Families

Editor’s Note: This week, revisit some of our favorite reads from 2023.
This year, states passed 21 laws restricting gender-affirming care for transgender youth; four states even made it a crime to provide such care. About 33 percent of trans youth now live in states where access to this care is banned. In 2023, it was not easy to be a trans child or one of their loved ones. But we invite you to revisit our comprehensive handbook for trans-affirming families, which we published this summer, and find reasons to celebrate. There are guides for making friends and finding community, suggestions for talking about pronouns with extended family (which might be especially helpful during any holiday get-togethers this week), ideas for celebrating a name change, a shopping guide, and more than a hundred other tips from those who have been there. Think of it as a resource for troubleshooting questions big and small, a conversation starter for your family, and a way to come closer together.
