DEBATE: Will Trump Beat Biden With Working Class Voters

Episode 137 with Matt Karp

Aug 18, 2023

Historian Matt Karp has joined us for a wide-ranging conversation on the midterms and what they tell us about class dealignment in the United States. Can this trend be stopped? Could Biden lose to Trump even with the indictments because of this working class shift? We’re answering these questions and more in this episode of Krystal Kyle & Friends. Watch below:

The focus of our conversation is: How do we build a party apparatus worthy of support from working-class voters — and capable of making good on its promises? As we’ve discussed in past KK&F convos, the Biden admin’s gambit — making centrist-friendly proposals to begin with, then, in many cases, watering them down in the face of Republican opposition or just plain amenability to austerity — has left many working-class voters wanting more. As we analyze the trend of class dealignment from midterms data, we’re inclined to think about the failures of the Democratic Party that have provoked this trend. Empty rhetoric about basic rights and fearmongering about Trump don’t seem to do the trick when it comes to retaining working-class support. What is the Democratic Party prepared to do to secure this support? What else is possible?

Positive changes to the material conditions everyday Americans face is, we believe, what will not only motivate people to vote but build robust, long-lasting party support. We discuss what these material policies could entail, what it will take for Democrats to support them, and how we see a process of class realignment to a left party taking place. Tune in for all this and more on this week’s episode of Krystal Kyle and Friends, available tomorrow on Spotify, Pandora, Apple Podcasts, and more.
