What are the implications of Saudi-Iranian diplomatic deal?

Entrenched on different sides on a host of issues, and in proxy wars, notably in Yemen, Syria and Lebanon, few would have believed even days ago that a rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Iran was imminent. The U.S. which would see itself as the dominant superpower in the Middle East was not involved in a talks process brokered by China. What are the implications in the Middle East and beyond?
