US President Donald Trump may face impeachment proceedings in Congress if the Democratic Party gains the majority after November’s midterm congressional elections, an American analyst in Virginia says.
“The crucial issue is the degree to which the Democrats are going to be able to maintain or obtain a substantial majority in the Congress,” said Keith Preston, chief editor of AttacktheSystem.com.
“If the Democrats are able to gain a lot of seats in the Congress, it’s possible that they could move towards the impeachment of the president,” Preston told Press TV on Tuesday.
“That would of course be extremely controversial,” similar to the impeachment efforts against former US President Richard Nixon in 1974, which led to his resignation, Preston said.
About half of Americans want the US Congress to begin impeachment proceedings against Trump, according to a new poll.
The Axios/Survey Monkey poll released Tuesday reveals 44 percent of respondents want US lawmakers to impeach the president.
Several Democratic Party lawmakers have publicly supported bringing impeachment proceedings against Trump. But senior Democrats, including Senator Chuck Schumer and Representative Nancy Pelosi have been wary of the prospect.
The survey was conducted after Trump’s longtime personal lawyer Michael Cohen pleaded guilty last week to charges of bank fraud, tax fraud and violations of election campaign finance laws.
Cohen’s campaign finance law violations stem from hush money payments the lawyer arranged during the 2016 US presidential campaign to women who allegedly had affairs with Trump.
Cohen said he made the payments at the direction of “a federal candidate for office,” seemingly implicating Trump. A majority, 64 percent, of Americans believe that Trump ordered Cohen to make the payments.
Trump is also under growing pressure after a guilty verdict for his former campaign manager Paul Manafort.
Efforts are underway on Capitol Hill to impeach Trump as soon as possible.
“The president has to realize that the countdown to impeachment has already started,” said congressman Al Green from Texas in a interview this week.
