Why America Is Moving Left 1

This article by Peter Beinart confirms what I’ve been saying for some years now. Beinart’s argument is consistent with just about every demographic, cultural, generational, economic, and partisan trend.

Republicans may have a lock on Congress and the nation’s statehouses—and could well win the presidency—but the liberal era ushered in by Barack Obama is only just beginning.

ver roughly the past 18 months, the following events have transfixed the nation.

In July 2014, Eric Garner, an African American man reportedly selling loose cigarettes illegally, was choked to death by a New York City policeman.

That August, a white police officer, Darren Wilson, shot and killed an African American teenager, Michael Brown, in Ferguson, Missouri. For close to two weeks, protesters battled police clad in military gear. Missouri’s governor said the city looked like a war zone.

In December, an African American man with a criminal record avenged Garner’s and Brown’s deaths by murdering two New York City police officers. At the officers’ funerals, hundreds of police turned their backs on New York’s liberal mayor, Bill de Blasio.

  1. Notice that all of this is happening within the context of the continued growth of the war machine, the police state and widening class divisions.

That’s one of the reasons why I call the system that is emerging “totalitarian humanism,” i.e. welfarism, environmentalism, anti-racism, feminism, gay rights, mass immigration, transexuals in the military, etc, etc, etc but within the context of an imperialist war machine, police/surveillance state and corporate plutocracy. I first outlined this theory is this old piece for Lew Rockwell nine years ago. If I were writing this today, I might take a somewhat different angle on certain things (for example, the Frankfurt School wouldn’t be as central to the general theory, and I doubt I’d use the term “liberal Nazism” today. Back then, I was relying more heavily on conventional paleconservative or right-libertarian critiques of the Left than I would today). But I’d still stand by the general perspective I presented in this. http://archive.lewrockwell.com/orig8/preston1.html

Here are some more recent commentaries on this question where I’ve modified the theory a bit:

This is probably about 5 or 6 years old. https://attackthesystem.com/the-ideology-of-totalitarian-humanism/

One thing I’ve become more cautious about is distancing myself from theories like Jonah Goldberg’s “liberal fascism” idea which associates classical American progressivism with fascism. No serious scholar of fascism, left or right, accepts Goldberg’s thesis. Paul Gottfried’s work on the actual history and intellectual roots of fascism is helpful on that question. I’ve also become more careful to distinguish this theory from the usual “Jewish conspiracy” interpretation of PC, not because I’m worried about being labeled anti-Semitic as much as I think it’s an overly reductionist theory that is factually and historically wrong. I actually think the New Right (and some paleocon and libertarian, see Murray Rothbard and Sam Francis) critique of PC as a kind of secularized Christianity is more accurate.

The reason that so many leftists can’t see this is because whatever their views on foreign policy, the role of the state is society, economics, etc. they tend to share the basic presumptions of totalitarian humanism (e.g. that racism and sexism are the ultimate evils, that gay liberation and environmentalism are the most pressing social issues), so they’re effectively disarmed in the face of totalitarian humanism. A problem with lot of libertarians and palecons is that they can’t recognize the degree to which capitalism has played a major role in fostering PC/TH because of their habit of dismissing everything they don’t like as “socialism.” And a lot of the “far right” can’t get past their Jew-fixation and recognize that the leading pushers of TH are white nations, white dominated governments, white intellectuals, white clerics, white bureaucrats, white capitalists, etc. with Jews who are doing the same thing being junior partners at best.
