Embedded deep in the Constitution is a sort of cheat code. Way past the stuff you’re familiar with is Article V, and inside that is a way to create amendments without going through Congress first. It’s simple, really: Just get two-thirds of the states to call for a convention to propose changes. The last time it happened, though, the U.S. threw out its old constitution (the Articles of Confederation) and replaced it with the current one. That’s the ultimate danger posed by a small, influential group of conservative activists pushing for another convention to, in their words, “reverse 115 years of progressivism.” Today, Casey Quackenbush reports that the man leading the charge is Mark Meckler, a former Herbalife salesman turned tea-partyer. Now he’s back for a second act, supported by the same figures who funded the right-wing takeover of the courts and the death of Roe. They’ve made an unlikely enemy though: fellow conservatives.
