Supposedly, the world is comprised of 200 sovereign nations. In reality, it’s more of a case where the USA has 50 formal states and 150 informal states, with another 50 functioning as provinces within the G20-dominated global capitalist empire that is maintained by the US military empire (see Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri on this).
