The left has rather changed the role of what the police state has gone after in this new secular age. The authoritarian right might use the police to go after blasphemy or abortion while the left will use the police state to go after those who attack the new sacred values such as environmentalism, racism, “wrong” speech, and even quarantine skeptics.
