BORN in 1957, Nishihira Tadashi has become one of Japan’s leading thinkers and academics. His philosophy of no-mind, or mushin, is presented in the context of both pre-Buddhist and Zen thought, the sacred ideas of D.T. Suzuki (1870–1966) and Toshihiko Izutsu (1914–1993), and the country’s enduring cultural phenomena such as traditional Noh theatre and the tactics of medieval swordsmanship. Unlike many other philosophers of the Kyoto School, Nishihira is eager to combine the wisdom and beauty of Japanese thought and spirituality with practical initiatives that seek to care for others and improve the human condition. Mushin, the central theme of his work, pertains to the notion that conscious actions can lead to the illumination of the individual from within and facilitate a greater awareness of humanity.
