Wallowa County in Oregon has become the 12th county to join the “Greater Idaho” movement, which aims to secede from the more progressive western part of the state and join conservative Idaho. The vote, which took place in May, initially had a slim margin of 21 votes in favor of the movement. After finalizing all the votes in June, the lead narrowed to only seven votes, just avoiding the need for a recount.

The “Greater Idaho” movement originated in 2020 as a response to the perceived neglect of rural eastern Oregon by the western part of the state. With Wallowa County’s support, all 12 counties that have held an election on the matter have voted in favor of exploring the move. However, support for formal talks between the two states’ legislatures about redrawing the border has been divided along party lines, with Democrats opposing the idea and Republicans embracing it.

The proposal to move the Idaho-Oregon border would require approval from both state legislatures and the U.S. Congress. If successful, Idaho’s population would increase by 21%, and there could be an annual net benefit to the state’s government of up to $170 million, according to an analysis by the Claremont Institute.

Following Wallowa County’s results, the Crook County Court has also voted in favor of including the “Greater Idaho” proposal on the ballot in May 2024. Two Oregon counties, Umatilla and Gilliam, have not yet scheduled a vote on the issue. The narrow margin in Wallowa County’s results, just seven votes, prevented a recount, which is triggered if a measure fails to exceed one-fifth of 1% of the vote according to Oregon state law.

Should this pass (which is doubtful since our country has a history of smacking down this type of behavior), would it be such a bad thing to let the liberals live in the mess they’ve made while conservatives join others without so much as having to pack a moving truck?

In our tumultuous world, when societies find themselves grappling with deep divisions that seem insurmountable, the prospect of peaceful separation emerges as a compelling solution. If profound differences stubbornly persist, resisting resolution through mutual understanding and compromise, granting societies the freedom to separate peacefully becomes imperative.

Attempting to force unity in the face of irreconcilable differences only breeds resentment, animosity, and further conflict. Embracing the option of peaceful separation provides a means for divergent groups to forge their own autonomous paths, where they can govern themselves according to their distinct values, beliefs, and aspirations.

Peaceful separation not only alleviates the burden of incompatible ideologies but also safeguards individual liberties and nurtures cultural, religious, and ideological diversity. It acknowledges that certain differences cannot be harmonized within a single framework and honors the right of individuals to pursue their own unique journeys towards happiness and fulfillment.

By permitting societies to peacefully separate, we empower them to chart their own destinies, fostering stability and preventing the disintegration of social cohesion. While the decision to part ways may be difficult, it paves the way for harmonious coexistence, wherein each society can cultivate its own identity, nurture its own progress, and ultimately find a sense of peace amidst irreconcilable differences.
