President Xi Jinping pledged on Tuesday that China would reach its peak emissions ahead of its 2030 goal and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, setting the most ambitious goal yet for the nation that is world’s top carbon dioxide polluter.

Xi’s comments to the United Nations General Assembly come as the United States under President Donald Trump has receded from the international climate stage, prompting the European Union to step in to put pressure on Beijing to speed its efforts.
