The irresponsible statements made by Republican presidential candidates underscore the level of competence in the US political establishment, an American political analyst says.
“We have the Republican Party that’s just gone off the scale in terms of extremism,” said Keith Preston, chief editor and director of AttacktheSystem.com, a website dedicated to encouraging revolt against domestic and foreign US government policies.
The GOP consists of “incompetent leaders that are being elevated to the top of the political class,” Preston said in an interview with Press TV on Wednesday.
The recent threat of war against Russia by GOP presidential contender and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is “astounding” and “irresponsible beyond belief,” he added.
“I think that this says a great deal about the quality of the people who are now becoming the leadership class of the United States,” the analyst stated.
During Tuesday’s Republican presidential debate in Las Vegas, Nevada, Christie said that as president, he would shoot down a Russian warplane if it breached a no-fly zone in Syria, and claimed President Barack Obama wasn’t strong enough to do the same.
“Maybe because I’m from New Jersey I have this plain-language hang-up,” Christie said. “I would talk to [Russian President] Vladimir Putin a lot, and I’d say listen, Mr. President, there’s a no-fly zone and it applies to you and yes we’d shoot down the planes of Russian pilots if they were stupid enough to think that this president was the same feckless weakling that the president we have in the Oval Office is right now.”
Russia launched an air campaign against terrorist groups fighting in Syria in late September upon a request from Damascus.
The US and its allies have allegedly been targeting Daesh (ISIL) militants since September 2014 but to no avail.
Daesh, which now controls parts of Syria and Iraq, has been engaged in crimes against humanity as well as the heritage of Iraq and Syria in the areas under its control.
