TELL Congress: We have a chance to defeat the Trump administration and build a bipartisan coalition to protect the people from warrantless government spying. Over the next few weeks, we need to ensure lawmakers take a stand against Trump and Stephen Miller’s mass surveillance agenda. Sign the petition: Stop Trump’s warrantless spying powers.
After weeks of advocacy, Trump and Stephen Miller’s effort to extend warrantless government surveillance of Americans failed twice. Now, the fight continues.
Demand Progress has been leading the calls to close loopholes that the Trump administration abuses to spy on the online communications and location data of Americans without a warrant. The White House has been trying to ram through legislation to extend Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) without critical privacy reforms.1
This fight will come to a head in just a few weeks. It’s critical that we put our full weight behind pressuring Congress to choose our Constitution and civil liberties over Trump’s authoritarian rule.
Sign the petition: Tell Congress to close Trump’s spying loopholes and protect our privacy rights!
Section 702 of FISA was set to expire on April 20th, and a bipartisan majority in the House rejected Trump’s extension.2 That was a major victory and gave us another ten days to fight for reforms.
42 House Democrats voted with Republicans nine days later to rubber-stamp Trump’s warrantless spying by a vote of 235 -191. But the Senate blocked the extension and Congress agreed to delay the fight another 45 days.3
This is another giant victory, and shows we have a chance to win. If just some of those 42 Democrats vote with our pro-privacy rights majority, we can secure measures to protect Americans from the warrantless government spying that’s up 300% at Kash Patel’s FBI.4
It’s rare for Trump to face defeat in Congress, but that’s exactly what we’ve seen happen these last few weeks. We need to continue putting pressure on our lawmakers to pass surveillance reforms and finally defeat Trump’s surveillance agenda.
Sign the petition: Vote NO on handing over warrantless spying powers to Trump and Stephen Miller.
Thanks for taking action,
Joey and the team at Demand Progress
