The law gives the president sweeping authority to effectively impose martial law and rule through sheer force. It’s only supposed to be used temporarily during extreme emergencies, but the law is so vaguely worded and provides so little oversight from Congress or the courts that the president could use it for virtually any reason.

In fact, Trump supporters wanted to use the Insurrection Act to block the certification of the 2020 presidential election.⁵
