Electoralism/Democratism

All Trump

All Trump

David Pan

Whatever one might think about Trump’s policies, there can be no disputing his extraordinary effectiveness in branding and marketing. Even before taking office, he was dominating headlines. Since January 20, it has been all Trump, all the time, on all platforms all over the world. His executive orders, social media musings, and conversations with Benjamin Netanyahu, Claudia Sheinbaum, and Vladimir Putin have all opened up stunning policy proposals, each of which has dominated airwaves and transformed national discussions. Democrats don’t know where to turn with this barrage. They have been signally incapable of articulating an alternative vision beyond defenses of the status quo ante, which end up only digging them even deeper into their hole, and the New York Times reports today that liberal donors are halting donations. As a politician, Trump has become invincible.

As we pause on Presidents’ Day to reflect, there is much to ponder about the presidency, and we at Telos are preparing our thoughts on Trump’s second chance for our next issue. Please stay tuned.

In the meantime, check out our just released issue Telos 209 (Winter 2024) on “Democracy Today?” and take advantage of our 20% discount on books such as the late Fred Siegel’s The Crisis of Liberalism: Prelude to Trump and Timothy Luke’s The Travails of Trumpification.
