Hello Repro Nation readers!
Meet Kay—a Texas woman, a student, a mother facing an unplanned pregnancy who knew she had to find a way to have an abortion, even though she couldn’t afford to travel out of state for an in-clinic abortion. Meet Dr. Linda Prine—a physician, a grandmother, an abortion provider who, thanks to a new so-called “shield” law in New York State, can legally prescribe medication abortion across state lines, sending pills into states with abortion bans. They are both part of the underground revolution in telemedicine abortion, which our abortion access correspondent Amy Littlefield explored in this month’s cover story.
Shield laws are enabling tens of thousands of people—including Kay—to safely terminate pregnancies in states that have abortion bans. And a number of providers, including Dr. Prine, are willing to take the legal risks to make that possible. With states like Louisiana changing the rules practically overnight, these providers have become more important than ever. But at the same time, we know that since the Supreme Court ended the nationwide right to legal abortion two years ago, thousands of people who wanted abortions have instead been forced to give birth. Amy’s article is chock-full of incredible details that help us understand what’s happening in this unprecedented moment in which abortion is both more accessible and more restricted than ever.
