I rather like Sagan’s reply to the first cause argument. If you claim the universe requires a cause, and you nominate a deity to do that, an honest enquirer will then ask what caused the deity to exist? If you want to claim a deity doesn’t require a cause then why does the universe require a cause? It’s special pleading.
