What Happens When You Give New Parents Cash Aid?

When she found out she was pregnant, Priscilla Rivera of New York City stepped back from her job as a nanny because of the work’s physical nature. Six weeks after giving birth, she began receiving cash transfers from the Bridge Project. “It just lifts a weight off of your shoulders,” she told The Nation.

Parenting, like any other job, is labor, and it should be compensated as such. Unconditional cash assistance is a common anti-poverty intervention in low- and middle-income countries, but the US has largely shied away from it. Cash transfer programs like the Bridge Project and San Francisco’s Abundant Birth Project are playing an important role, but their eyes, ultimately, are set on the federal government.
