Brazilian Elections Return Lula to Office and Leave Bolsonaro Silent

by Peter Zeihan on November 1, 2022

The Brazilian elections took place over the weekend, resulting in a narrow win by center-left candidate and former president – Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, over right-incumbent Jair Bolsonaro. As of now, Bolsonaro has remained silent on the election results and many of the world’s leaders have already congratulated Lula on his victory.

If Bolsonaro were to challenge the election results, it would likely come with little formal support and garner little traction. However, a challenge from the incumbent could leave Brazil in a troublesome place.
