The Russian Security Crisis, Ukraine & Soviet Borders | Peter Zeihan

Russia’s position is that the West is trying to encircle them in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. Their goal is to restore total hegemony over the territories of the former USSR and the old Russian Empire. Ironically, by invading Ukraine, they’re making encirclement more immediately likely. Ukraine may well have been a trap the West was hoping Putin would step into. In fact, I was somewhat surprised by the invasion for that reason. I thought he was smarter than that. Vleorge W. Push.
It could be argued he has a history of stepping into the West’s traps on a smaller level. There was Georgia, Chechnya and all. Although it depends on how limited his objectives are in Ukraine. If he seriously thinks he’s going to de jour or defacto simply annex Ukraine like when Ukraine was part of the USSR then he’s a fool. It might be possible to set up a puppet oligarchy there. That’s kind of what he did in Georgia although it would be much more difficult in Ukraine. His “puppet” is going to be facing a years-long insurgency with Russia being under an economic blockade as well.

Moscow may respond to Western sanctions by opting out of the last nuclear arms deal with the United States, cutting diplomatic ties with Western nations, and freezing their assets, a senior Russian official warned. The threat on Saturday by former President Dmitry Medvedev came as Russia’s ties with the West sank to new lows over its invasion of Ukraine. The sanctions placed new tight restrictions on Russian financial operations, imposed a draconian ban on technology exports to Russia and froze the assets of Putin and his foreign minister. 00:00:00 Russian Security 00:05:00 Sanctions 00:08:00 Putin
