Jamie Kirchick, writing in the Los Angeles Times, asks readers to imagine a military coup against a future President Donald Trump — and argues why one would be necessary.

Kirchick cites the example of the recent failed coup in Turkey as a source of inspiration:

Americans viewing the recent failed coup attempt in Turkey as some exotic foreign news story — the latest, violent yet hardly unusual political development to occur in a region constantly beset by turmoil — should pause to consider that the prospect of similar instability would not be unfathomable in this country if Donald Trump were to win the presidency.

  1. What this shows is that as the U.S. fractures into warring tribes, the state is losing its legitimacy. For an ostensibly democratic government to work, all parties involved have to accept the legitimacy of the system and lose graciously when they don’t get their way. This can only happen in a society where there is a basic consensus about primary values. When the contending forces in democratic societies regard each other not as honest competitors, but as mortal enemies, democracy is not going to last very long. This is where the US almost is at present. The major political tribes view each other as the equivalent of enemy nations.

  2. It’s interesting how on one hand we have neocons calling for an actual military coup against a potential Trump presidency, and at least some the “anti-fascist” types seem to be moving towards Chomsky’s “Anybody But a Republican” line. http://threewayfight.blogspot.com/2016/07/making-america-worse.html Perhaps this is an indication of the neocon/SJW convergence I have suspected would eventually happen. A soft convergence of this kind is already happening with Madame Hillary the Dragon Lady. She’s essentially giving the neocons and neoliberals what they want on foreign policy and economics while giving the soft totalitarian humanists what they want on social and cultural issues. The antifa and extreme SJW types represent hard totalitarian humanists whose outlook could probably be eventually be reconciled with the implicit right-wing Trotskyism of the neocons, i.e. a hybrid of a domestic totalitarian regime whose ideological superstructure is a jihad against any manifestation of all the Isms, Archies, and Phobia on the Left’s laundry list and an aggressive foreign ostensibly intended to eradicate Isms, Archies, and Phobias abroad and impose “democracy” and “human rights” on the rest of the world.
