The Trump Administration and the Guilfoyle Case

She Appears to Have Welcomed Greeks Bearing Gifts

The entirely casual attitude toward corruption held by the Trump Administration is a wonder to behold. The latest example of this is the recent scandal and resignation of Kimberly Guilfoyle as US Ambassador to Greece. Guilfoyle got the job because she was the “domestic partner” of Donald Trump Jr.

The allegations against Guilfoyle are serious ones and not connected to any purely technical violation of rules. A Trump donor, Eric Deters, accused Guilfoyle of asking him to pay off an $100,000 American Express card debt in exchange for access to highly placed Administration officials. Deters did not pay the credit card bill and tipped off the press about the attempted illegal arrangement. The State Department’s Inspector General is looking into other alleged pay-for-play schemes by Miss Guilfoyle with other businessmen.

The Wall Street Journal has reported that the ambassador travelled on private jets and stayed at luxury hotels provided by Greek business magnates Alexandros Exarchou and Nikolas Tsakos. Others are alleging that Guilfoyle was arranging energy deals between Greek, Ukrainian, Romanian and Albanian companies. All of this is not a simple case of some ditzy broad with an affinity for plastic surgery being in over her head. Guilfoyle does have a law degree from San Francisco State, not exactly Yale on the Bay, but none of these allegations should have passed an illegality smell test by anyone with a small brain.

Mr. Trump has increased his personal assets a cool 2.2 Billion since taking office for his current term. His family members, most notably his sons, have been making all sorts of side deals and business arrangements. The whole administration has the stink of corruption. He should have decided on day one to give up on business and concentrate on the people’s business. The fact that we are now in a wholly unnecessary war that is putting the nation on the brink of recession, if not depression, shows that this old man is too distracted by his personal business transactions to solve the major life or death problems of the nation.
