Our July/August Special Issue →
For our new issue of The Nation, which marks this country’s 250th anniversary, we invited our greatest progressive thinkers and activists and elected leaders—from the Rev. William Barber to US Representative Jamie Raskin, from labor leader Sara Nelson to actress Jane Fonda, from critic Kate Wagner to historian Gerald Horne—to consider the state of the American experiment. And whom do we quote on the cover? Tom Paine, of course. Because we still believe that Paine was right when he promised Americans, “We have it in our power to begin the world over again!”

In an age ruled by kings and potentates, emperors and monarchs, Paine put pen to paper and declared for all the world to know that: “so far as we approve of monarchy, that in America the law is king. For as in absolute governments the King is law, so in free countries the law ought to be king; and there ought to be no other.” Paine recognized the power of words and ideas 250 years ago. At The Nation, we keep the flame of dissenting, enlightening, and empowering journalism alive today. We hope you enjoy our July/August issue.
