| Trump apparently thinks he’s a global hegemon.
His latest harebrained scheme, Jeet Heer writes this week, is an expanded version of the Abraham Accords between Israel and other Middle Eastern countries, which he claims would “bring true Power, Strength, and Peace to the Middle East for the first time in 5,000 years.” But why, Heer asks, would countries like Egypt and Jordan be motivated to join such a thing?
Meanwhile, Trump touched down last week in China for his first visit to the country in almost a decade, with none other than Elon Musk and Jensen Huang in tow. While things with China are almost looking good compared to our country’s other tense international relationships right now, the meeting between Trump and Xi demonstrated, according to Jake Werner, just “how unhealthy the relationship remains.”
Nothing abroad is looking great for Trump. But at least he has his gaudy arch back at home. Soon enough, our architecture critic Kate Wagner writes, DC will see an arch modeled after the Arc de Triomphe, except uglier and 250 feet high: “one foot for every year the United States has existed!”
