UPDATE: The House is set to vote next week on a war powers resolution requiring Trump to seek authorization from Congress before carrying out military strikes in Iran.¹

The vote comes as the military buildup around Iran reaches levels unseen since the invasion of Iraq more than two decades ago², and troops in the region are on high-alert as the U.S. pulls non-essential officials from its embassy in Lebanon, citing the “security environment.”³

The vote in the House will come down to the wire, and with Republicans unable to afford any more defections, the White House is already preparing to whip hard against it and a parallel vote in the Senate⁴. We need all our representatives to sign on to stop the march to war.

The signs of approaching major military action are clear. On Tuesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with the “Gang of Eight” — House and Senate party leaders typically told when attacks are imminent.⁵

Senate Majority Leader Thune made clear his priority is regime change, saying “In my view, if you’re going to do something there, you better well make it about getting new leadership and regime change.”⁶ Senator Lindsey Graham raised the stakes even further, ridiculously comparing war with Iran to a “Berlin Wall moment” that could “liberate millions” suffering oppression.⁷

War against Iran would be a horrific disaster that could last for decades, just like the U.S. wars on Iraq and Afghanistan. And Trump’s strikes on Iran would be illegal without congressional authorization. It’s urgent that Congress averts this nightmare and votes in favor of the War Powers Resolution introduced by representatives Ro Khanna and Thomas Massie.⁸

The vote will take place in the House in days, and a vote on a similar resolution in the Senate could also take place next week. We must ensure that our lawmakers act to stop a Trump war with Iran.
