Raids in NOLA, Warner Bros., and albums of the year

DECEMBER 12, 2025
The Stagecraft Behind the New Orleans Immigration Raids →
This week, a caravan of Louisiana state troopers descended on New Orleans, Warner Bros.-Discovery became the subject of the world’s most depressing bidding war, and we announced our top albums of the year.

Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bevino’s team carried out 38 arrests in New Orleans over the first four days of “Operation Catahoula Crunch.” As Amanda Moore writes, “of the 38 people detained, only nine had criminal records—a percentage that’s generally in line with the national numbers for the immigration raids, which show that more than 70 percent of the people arrested had no criminal convictions.”

Meanwhile, Donald Trump wasn’t even paying attention. Instead, he seemed to be getting back to his roots: yelling about Hollywood. On Monday, the president discussed the ongoing fight over whether Netflix or Paramount will swallow up Warner Bros.-Discovery, claiming that “none of them are particularly great friends of mine”—ironic, as Ben Schwartz notes, given that Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner is backing the Paramount bid.

But maybe you want to tune all of this out. It’s the end of the year, after all. We understand, and our music critic David Hajdu has just the playlist for you.
