TELL CONGRESS: Trump is trying to criminalize his political opposition and end protest in America. His NSPM-7 is a sweeping national security memo that directs Kash Patel, Pam Bondi, and Stephen Miller to go after people and organizations opposing Trump’s agenda. Ted Cruz has a bill in Congress to make these political persecutions even easier. Sign the petition: Block Ted Cruz’s bill to criminalize protests!
Keith,
Trump signed a sweeping national security memo that empowers the FBI and DOJ to go after people, nonprofits, and other organizations that oppose Trump’s agenda.
This broad directive, called NSPM-7 or the “Countering Domestic Terrorism and Organized Political Violence” memo, puts anyone that Kash Patel, Pam Bondi, or Stephen Miller determine holds “anti-American” beliefs or “extreme” views on topics like race, gender, “American values,” or immigration at serious risk of targeted political persecution.1
Ted Cruz has a bill that would enshrine some of this dangerous memo into law. Cruz’s legislation targets protesters with criminal prosecution, including the organizers of the No Kings rallies.2 Congress must stop MAGA’s unconstitutional attack on the First Amendment.
Cruz’s dangerous bill (the “Stop FUNDERs Act”) is a threat to anyone who shows up to protests or even expresses a dissenting opinion. In fact, a top official at Border Patrol said recently that “hyperbolic comments” about ICE agents can be grounds for arrest.3
The regime is both openly attempting to silence criticism of Trump AND secretly using powerful state resources to compile lists of Trump’s enemies and labelling them as “domestic terrorists.”4
Trump and his MAGA loyalists are trying to circumvent the Constitution, our civil liberties, and the foundations of American democracy. Congress can’t pass a law that hands Trump permission for his authoritarian political persecutions.
Thanks for taking action,
Joey and the Demand Progress team
