John Milbank on The Politics of Virtue—A Postliberal Manifesto

From the 2024 Postliberalism Conference

Over the coming days, we will be posting videos from the 2024 Postliberalism Conference, which took place on December 13–14, 2024, at the University of Cambridge. Many videos are already available, with more to come soon. If you are not yet a subscriber, be sure to subscribe to Telos Insights to receive updates when each new video is posted.

In this video, we present John Milbank’s keynote address “The Politics of Virtue—A Postliberal Manifesto,” from day 2 of Political Economy and the Good Life: The 2024 Postliberalism Conference. Milbank is Emeritus Professor of Religion, Politics and Ethics, University of Nottingham, as well as author of Theology and Social Theory (1990) and The Politics of Virtue (2016, with Adrian Pabst).

The panel discussion was moderated by Michael Gove, Editor of The Spectator and a Conservative Cabinet Minister (2010–2014), and it featured responses to Milbank’s lecture from the following three speakers:

  • Susannah Black Roberts, Senior Editor at Plough and New Polity;
  • John Ritzema, Associate Faculty Member and Pharos Foundation Marshall Research Fellow, Faculty of Theology and Religion, University of Oxford; and
  • Imogen Sinclair, Director of the New Social Covenant Unit.
The 2024 Postliberalism Conference took place on December 13–14, 2024, in the McCrum Lecture Theatre, Corpus Christi College, University of Cambridge, UK. Co-sponsored by the Telos-Paul Piccone Institute, the Centre for Social Renewal, Energeia, and Plough, the conference brought together leading academics, politicians, policymakers, and journalists to explore the errors and excesses of liberalism and to conceptualize constructive alternatives to its worldview and to the dominant theoretical models that underpin it.

Telos Insights on Substack

We invite you to join the Telos-Paul Piccone Institute as we migrate all our content—text, video, and audio—to Telos Insights on Substack, a premiere platform for serious readers. In the future, Telos Insights will be the primary way to access our work.

Signing up for a Substack account is easy. You can do so here. If you enjoy reading on your tablet or phone, you can also download the Substack app, which works well and looks great. Once you sign up for Substack and subscribe to Telos Insights, you can adjust your settings to be alerted regularly to new TPPI posts, as well as opt in to alerts from the many other excellent organizations and individual writers sharing content on the platform. Please note that during the first weeks after you follow us on Substack, as a courtesy you will receive notices about our new content from both Substack and Telos Press, but in time notifications will come through Substack alone.

A Substack account is free, and for now all Telos Insights content will be free too. But in the near future, Telos Insights will have a two-tiered structure. While some posts, videos, and podcasts will be free, to read most of them you will need to become a member of the Telos-Paul Piccone Institute. Membership is $40/year, or $15/year for students, and it is tax-deductible in the United States. Membership runs through the end of the calendar year in which payment is received. Your Telos Insights subscription will automatically become active a few days after your membership is processed. You can also subscribe to Telos Insights directly on a monthly basis through Substack at $5/month, or a yearly basis at $40/year. We dedicate all revenue directly toward the production of further content.

Telos Insights includes different sections, listed on the banner text at the top of its home page. These sections correspond to TPPI’s special interests or formal initiatives, including “Beyond State and Market,” our new initiative about political economy. You can subscribe to each of these sections of Telos Insights individually by adjusting the subscription settings in your Substack account (instructions here). We have already migrated all of the videos from our Israel initiative and China initiative to the site.

You can join Substack here; the page for Telos Insights is here; you can become a member of TPPI here; and you can subscribe to Telos Insights directly here. We hope that you will follow our efforts and join our conversations.
