Steve Bannon’s Second Term

November 18, 2024
Steve Bannon had a week for the ages leading up to the election. On October 29, the right-wing organizer and former Trump lieutenant was released from federal prison after serving time for contempt of Congress. He immediately kicked into action, trying to get his old boss reelected. Bannon’s daily podcast, War Room, has emerged as a beating heart of the MAGA movement, despite chilly relations with Donald Trump. New York writer Andrew Rice embedded with Bannon after his release and spent many hours with him through the night of the election. Andrew captured the bluster, the threats, the insider mutterings about how the second Trump administration will be staffed and how it would pursue its hard-right policy agenda — including going after political opponents. Like the president-elect himself, it sometimes makes sense not to take Bannon literally, but given his current influence with the Trump team, it is wise to take him seriously.
