Four more years

At the height of Donald Trump’s first term as president, I spent most of the Daily Maverick newsletter-day pruning down the multitude of shocking or idiotic announcements into four or five news wrap-ups for you.

That soon became a mentally scathing exercise that, frankly, I was glad to see the end of when Joe Biden beat him in 2020.

Now we return full circle to the incoming circus. This time, the worst instincts of Trump will not be held in check by the likes of Jim Mattis or any one of his former advisers. Now, the right will be able to truly see whether they were right, and he will usher in a golden age of America, or whether as conventional wisdom has it, this is the nadir of US liberal democracy.

But back to your newsletters: The news sources we use (traditionally Reuters and Bloomberg) will be clogged to the withers with news about planet Trump.

This time, I’m going to try to cut out the noise as much as humanly possible.

This is because, while the Trump gravitational pull is enormous, there are other, critical stories that warrant reporting on First Thing in the morning. A genocide in Sudan has gone dangerously un-reported, while similar atrocities persist in the Middle East. Russia is still actively at war with Ukraine, and the ravages of climate change will only get worse.

These are important things to keep abreast of regularly, and I’ll be doing my level-best to make sure not everything is about what’s happening in isolationist America.

That being said, if – or should I say when – there is another Covfefe, I will be dropping my 4am coffee and rusk to immediately laugh, and then write about it.

or 🇯🇵?

The internet’s most mysterious song

A song recorded by a family in the 80s sparked a tens-of-thousands of people, multi-year search for the artist, all coming to naught. It took until now for one enterprising redditor to find an article in the newspaper archives in Germany about FEX, a band hitting the radio in September 1984. Now, we present to you the internet’s formerly most mysterious song.
