Election Day is 72 hours away. So … how’s everybody feeling? This week, we sent our most gonzo reporter, Rachel Handler, out onto the streets of New York in an attempt to capture everyone’s private anxieties and coping strategies — at least, anybody who was willing to talk to her. She visited her local bodega and the Brooklyn strip club Pumps; she called up an expert in “waiting anxiety” and the youngest and oldest voters she knows. (“I can remember the Second World War,” said June Squibb, 94. “That was frightening.”) The result is a portrait of a city on edge, all rendered with Rachel’s typical humor and wit. “Depending on who wins, everybody is gonna go crazy and try to kill each other,” one man on the subway told her. “You ever seen Civil War? It’s gonna be like that.” —Gazelle Emami, editorial director, New York
