A tactic of Antifa to deal with national anarchists is attacking them. I think this is nonsense. I mean, what do national anarchists want? They want to hang around with white people only. Wanting to only hang with white people is not a problem. It’s up to you who you want to hang around with. Free association, free dissociation
Antifa should, in theory, be defensive. The idea behind Antifa was to defend people from actual Nazi attacks. National anarchists don’t attack people. They are, in a way, the most moderate/mild sort of fascists, you could say. So, then Antifa also doesn’t have to react to them. Live and let live.
I strongly disagree with national anarchists, but you don’t change people or their perspective with violence—something the left doesn’t understand. Violence towards the right only makes them stronger. Antifa was meant as a defensive movement, not an offensive movement. Antifa should, in theory, respect free speech if they stand for freedom.
So, when we look at this thing national anarchists want—racial separation—I never understood this kind of thinking, this desire. Maybe this is because I’m both influenced/inspired by classical liberalism and existentialist romanticism. Both ideas are based on the individual, not the group. The individual is unique, as Stirner would say. Everyone is unique; there is only one you. You are not your ‘race’; you are less and more than that.
National anarchists act as if I have something in common with other white people only because they are white. This is, of course, nonsense. We are both white, so let’s talk about our interesting commonality, namely our white skin? So, these disgusting people that live here in my street, I could easily be friends with them because their skin color is also pretty light?
But white people have the same culture, the national anarchist might say. This is also nonsense. Do working-class and middle-class whites have the same culture? Do Catholic whites have the same culture as Marxist whites? Do urban whites have the same culture as whites from the farmland? Do woke whites have the same culture as conservative whites? Do spiritual whites have the same culture as atheist whites? Do entrepreneur whites have the same culture as government whites?
In my country, every province already has a different culture and dialect. A culture is formed by region, religion, class, and other complex and changing factors.
‘Race’ never played a role in my live. I don’t see why I shouldn’t hang around with a person only because his skin is darker than mine. I just don’t see the rationality behind that, and I’m not even a very rational person.
Nationalism is hating people you don’t know and being proud of things you never did. I forgot who said that.
So, there can be nationalist/white power anarchists, technically speaking. But it’s not something the anarchist movement should be happy about because it would be very bad for the name of anarchism in general if it would become a big thing. When you’re racist, that’s up to you, as long as you don’t attack anyone. But please don’t tell people your racism is important to anarchism because then you give anarchism a bad reputation. Just be that kind of person who hangs around only with white people, if that’s what you want, but don’t act as if that is somehow a new, interesting anarchist position. The national anarchists can say it’s up to us how we present ourselves. This is true, but you harm other anarchist and libertarian movements by putting white power crosses on anarchist flags, etc. For outsiders, it becomes very confusing. They might think all anarchists are racist when they see these symbols.
