As the Biden administration heralds a decrease in illegal crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border, it’s crucial to look beyond the surface of these preliminary statistics. While any reduction in unlawful entries is welcome, the administration’s broader handling of border security reveals a troubling pattern of misplaced priorities and ineffective solutions that compromise both national security and public trust.
A Superficial Reprieve
Recent reports from ABC News indicate a significant drop in illegal crossings, a shift the administration is quick to attribute to its policy adjustments and international collaborations, particularly with Mexico.
However, this decrease does not address the core issues that have plagued our southern border for years. Instead, it serves as a temporary reprieve in a situation where permanent, robust solutions are desperately needed.
The Biden administration’s oversight extends beyond just the numbers of those apprehended. Over 1.6 million reported “known gotaways” over the past three years underline a gaping hole in our border security. These are individuals who have successfully evaded capture, their identities and intentions unknown, posing a clear risk to national security and public safety. The situation begs the question: How many more unknown gotaways are there, and what risks do they pose?
Operation Lone Star: A State’s Response to Federal Inaction
In response to the federal government’s failure to secure the border effectively, Texas launched Operation Lone Star. This initiative, spearheaded by Governor Greg Abbott, demonstrates a state-driven effort to uphold national security when the federal response falls short.
The operation has led to the apprehension of over 511,000 illegal immigrants, highlighting the scale of the crisis and the state’s proactive stance in protecting its citizens.

Biden’s Political Calculations and the Border Crisis
The administration’s approach to border security seems to be driven more by political optics than by an effective security strategy.
The proposed executive order to suspend asylum processing during spikes in illegal crossings is a Band-Aid solution that fails to address the systemic problems of our immigration system. It also underscores a reactive policy framework that prioritizes political expediency over sustainable, law-abiding measures.
A Call for Action
As the November elections approach, it is crucial for policymakers and the public to demand more than just temporary fixes to enduring issues. The administration must be held accountable for its handling of the border crisis, not just celebrated for transient decreases in crossings. True security will only be achieved through a firm commitment to enforce our laws consistently and to reform our immigration system comprehensively.
