Judge Mandisa Maya is set to lead South Africa’s judiciary for the next 10 years after the Judicial Service Commission on Tuesday 21 May recommended her appointment to President Cyril Ramaphosa.

🇵🇸🚚 The United Nations will transport aid in the Gaza Strip on new routes from a US-built floating pier, after crowds of desperate Palestinians intercepted 11 trucks. The temporary pier was anchored to a Gaza beach last Thursday. US officials said it would initially handle 90 trucks a day.
🇮🇱📷 Israel has backed down and returned camera equipment to the Associated Press after facing widespread condemnation from media groups and from its closest ally, the US. Authorities confiscated the gear after accusing the AP of breaking the law and providing a broadcast to Al Jazeera, which it placed under a temporary ban.
🇺🇸🗳️ Only 36% of Americans approve of Joe Biden’s job performance, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll. The lowest the US President’s public approval rating has fallen in almost two years – and a warning sign for his reelection effort.
🇲🇩🇪🇺 Moldova has signed a security and defence partnership with the European Union. With hopes to join the EU by 2030, it is the first country to agree such a deal with the bloc.

🚴 Tadej Pogačar won a weather-hit stage 16 at the Giro d’Italia on Tuesday and further extending his massive lead in the general classification to more than seven minutes. It was his fifth stage win at this year’s race.

🎾 Rafa Nadal hopes to play in the French Open but niggling injuries threaten to sour what would likely be the Spaniard’s last appearance at the Grand Slam he dominated for nearly two decades and won 14 times.
