‘The Moms Who Smoke in Secret,’ by Emily Gould

“I wish I could say that I ever tried to hide my smoking from my children,” New York’s Emily Gould writes in her latest story, “but the reality is that I couldn’t, because I was around them all the time and I also smoked all the time.” There has never been more pressure on parents to model perfect behavior for their children. But what if nicotine is the thing that gets you through the day? Emily — who has since replaced cigarettes with a Juul — wanted to know how other moms feel about their shared habit. The women she spoke with were ashamed of their nicotine use but unable to give it up. As one Nicorette-addicted mom told her, “I don’t want to make nicotine some sort of ‘flying my freedom flag,’ but it is a little piece of resistance, I guess.”
