Scam in Bio

If you spend a lot of time on the platform formerly known as Twitter, first, I’m sorry; and, second, you probably have seen the ubiquitous spam messages there that, with a distinct typography, promise “NUDES” — or other stuff — “IN BIO.” Technology columnist John Herrman got curious about where this infestation was coming from and why it has been so persistent under the ownership of Elon Musk, who took over the company promising to declare war on bots and spam. The trail leads to a small Dutch company with unsavory business practices. What John finds offers an interesting lens on some darker aspects of the online economy, as well as on Musk’s stewardship of X.
