Inside the Craziest College-Admissions Season Ever

Getting into college has always been stressful and a little chaotic. But in the last few years, and particularly this year, it has become much more so. The admissions season that is wrapping up now, as colleges send out their decision letters, is marked by a record number of applications, new and uncertain policies on diversity following a landmark Supreme Court decision ending race-conscious admissions, and a trend among schools toward opaque admissions policies intended to boost their own metrics. Jeffrey Selingo, who wrote a feature for New York last month about the SATs, reports on the new pain points and big questions that faced the incoming class of 2029 as they tried to secure a seat at a school that appeals to them. Here’s hoping their experience attending college is more pleasant than the one of applying.
