To Whom Does Israel Belong?

by Georg Immanuel Nagel

Georg Immanuel Nagel argues that the ‘Middle East conflict’ can never be resolved and no state has the ‘right to exist’.

Interestingly, both the left and the right are highly divided on this issue. There are friends of both Israel and Palestine everywhere. Generally, there is a tendency to fervently support one side and demonise the other. This conflict enjoys an inflated importance in Western public opinion, especially when compared to other conflicts.

No Moralisation of the Middle East Conflict

The ‘Middle East conflict’ is mostly discussed in two incorrect ways: historically and morally. Realpolitik has nothing to do with either. The question of who the ‘good’ and ‘bad’ guys are, as well as who has done more harm in the course of the conflict, is unanswerable. The historical debate is highly interesting but equally worthless. The history of the Jews is certainly very special and full of burning questions, which are interesting, sometimes highly remarkable, but have no place in political debates.

The historical refutation of mythical traditions or the revision of historical doctrines will not influence real politics. All these debates are merely ‘opium for the people’ and serve to distract from realpolitik, which is decided in backrooms.

Nobody can historically determine who ‘owns’ this land. Here, religious myths are mixed with truths and half-truths. Throughout history, this region has been highly contested. Who ruled this land earlier, later, or in between is a question for historians, not politicians. Every piece of land has been inhabited by another people before.
