‘Can You Teach a Grown Adult to Flirt?’

It seems we have a flirting crisis on our hands. At least we at the Cut think so; it came up a few months ago at a story-ideas meeting. While the causes are familiar — pandemic isolation, dating apps — we were still shocked at our collective inability to define “good” flirting, let alone describe it. So features editor Jordan Larson set out to do just that with a weeklong series of stories exploring the good, the bad, and the painfully awkward of this category of human interaction. Our Flirting Week kicks off with writer Bindu Bansinath’s quest to learn the art of cheeky banter with help from her friends, a few professionals, and, of course, TikTok. The result? “I can think of nothing except how smart aliens are to avoid us,” Bindu writes, “how lucky they are that they’ll never have to flirt with us, knock on wood.” Good luck out there, folks.
