I am personally looking forward to the reign of King Charles III. I can’t get enough of his barely suppressed rage (exhibited, for example, when his expensive fountain pens don’t work) and his barely suppressed contempt (when he tut-tuts at yet another incompetent Tory prime minister begging for his approval). I hope the soap opera involving his feuding, ungrateful sons goes on forever. But I am also an American, which means a part of me is aghast that self-respecting citizens of an ostensibly democratic nation would let themselves be lorded over by a person who is, in the end, just some guy. Thankfully, Britain is not totally devoid of people who feel likewise, and today Tanya Gold offers a fascinating report on how they are feeling on the eve of Charles’s coronation. It turns out there’s never been a better time to be against the monarchy.
