As commentators like Thomas Piketty and Bill Bishop have pointed out, the roles of the parties are being reversed. The Left parties are becoming the parties of the elite and the Right parties are becoming the parties of the working class (with some outliers). My suspicion is that this process will have a “liberalizing” effect on the GOP “base” with the faith and flag conservatives and populist-right becoming more marginal as more moderates, radical centrists, disillusioned liberals, #walkaway types, minorities, union members, and others move toward the Republicans.
