Unlike the Marxists, I generally regard the lumpenproletariat (for example, folks conventionally categorized as “criminals”), declasse’ sectors (for example, the youth of middle-class origins inclined toward violence), and the neo-peasantry (for example, rural gun nuts or the present-day anti-lockdown protestors), along with associated petite bourgeois and conventional proletarian elements, as being the “vanguard classes.” I actually agree more with Bakunin, Sorel, Fanon, and Newton on this rather than Marx. I’ve written about this before. See here. I’m more inclined to see Marxists and social democrats as the left-wing of the middle-class.
