Anti-Imperialism/Foreign Policy

Russia Under Attack

The overthrow of the government of the United States should be the primary objective of all those presently seeking to advance world peace.

By Paul Craig Roberts

In a number of my articles I have explained that the Soviet Union served as a constraint on US power. The Soviet collapse unleashed the neoconservative drive for US world hegemony. Russia under Putin, China, and Iran are the only constraints on the neoconservative agenda.

Russia’s nuclear missiles and military technology make Russia the strongest military obstacle to US hegemony. To neutralize Russia, Washington broke the Reagan-Gorbachev agreements and expanded NATO into former constituent parts of the Soviet Empire and now intends to bring former constituent parts of Russia herself–Georgia and Ukraine–into NATO. Washington withdrew from the treaty that banned anti-ballistic missiles and has established anti-ballistic missile bases on Russia’s frontier. Washington changed its nuclear war doctrine to permit nuclear first strike.

All of this is aimed at degrading Russia’s deterrent, thereby reducing the ability of Russia to resist Washington’s will.

The Russian government (and also the government of Ukraine) foolishly permitted large numbers of US funded NGOs to operate as Washington’s agents under cover of “human rights organizations,” “building democracy,” etc. The “pussy riot” event was an operation designed to put Putin and Russia in a bad light. (The women were useful dupes.) The Western media attacks on the Sochi Olympics are part of the ridiculing and demonizing of Putin and Russia. Washington is determined that Putin and Russia will not be permitted any appearance of success in any area, whether diplomacy, sports, or human rights.

The American media is a Ministry of Propaganda for the government and the corporations and helps Washington paint Russia in bad colors. Stephen F. Cohen accurately describes US media coverage of Russia as a “tsunami of shamefully unprofessional and politically inflammatory articles.”http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article37635.htm

As a holdover from the Cold War, the US media retains the image of a free press that can be trusted. In truth, there is no free press in America (except for Internet sites). See for example:http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/02/12/us-press-freedom-index-2014_n_4773101.html During the later years of the Clinton regime, the US government permitted 5 large conglomerates to concentrate the varied, dispersed and somewhat independent media.The value of these large mega-companies depends on their federal broadcast licenses.Therefore, the media dares not go against the government on any important issue. In addition, the media conglomerates are no longer run by journalists but by corporate advertising executives and former government officials, with an eye not on facts but on advertising revenues and access to government “sources.”

Washington is using the media to prepare the American people for confrontation with Russia and to influence Russians and other peoples in the world against Putin. Washington would love to see a weaker or more pliable Russian leader than Putin.

Many Russians are gullible. Having experienced communist rule and the chaos from collapse, they naively believe that America is the best place, the example for the world, the “white hat” that can be trusted and believed. This idiotic belief, which we see manifested in western Ukraine as the US destabilizes the country in preparation for taking it over, is an important weapon that the US uses to destabilize Russia.

Some Russians make apologies for Washington by explaining the anti-Russian rhetoric as simply a carryover from old stereotypes from the Cold War. “Old stereotypes” is a red herring, a misleading distraction. Washington is gunning for Russia. Russia is under attack, and if Russians do not realize this, they are history.

Many Russians are asleep at the switch, but the Izborsk Club is trying to wake them up. In an article (February 12) in the Russian weekly Zavtra, strategic and military experts warned that the Western use of protests to overturn the decision of the Ukraine government not to join the European Union had produced a situation in which a coup by fascist elements was a possibly. Such a coup would result in a fratricidal war in Ukraine and would constitute a serious “strategic threat to the Russian Federation.”

The experts concluded that should such a coup succeed, the consequences for Russia would be:

— Loss of Sevastopol as the base of the Russian Federation’s Black Sea Fleet;

— Purges of Russians in eastern and southern Ukraine, producing a flood of refugees;

— Loss of manufacturing capacities in Kiev, Dnepropetrovsk, Kharkov wherecontract work is done for the Russian military;

— Suppression of the Russian speaking population by forcible Ukrainianization;

— The establishment of US and NATO military bases in Ukraine, including in Crimeaand the establishment of training centers for terrorists who would be set upon theCaucasus, the Volga Basin, and perhaps Siberia.

— Spread of the orchestrated Kiev protests into non-Russian ethnicities in cities ofthe Russian Federation.

The Russian strategists conclude that they “consider the situation taking shape in Ukraine to be catastrophic for the future of Russia.”

What is to be done? Here the strategic experts, who have correctly analyzed the situation, fall down. They call for a national media campaign to expose the nature of the takeover that is underway and for the government of the Russian Federation to invoke the Budapest Memorandum of 1994 in order to convene a conference of representatives of the governments of Russia, Ukraine, the USA, and Great Britain to deal with the threats to the Ukraine. In the event that the Budapest Memorandum governing the sovereignty of Ukraine is set aside by one or more of the parties, the experts propose that the Russian government, using the precedent of the Kennedy-Khrushchev negotiations that settled the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, negotiate directly with Washington a settlement of the developing crisis in Ukraine.

This is a pipe dream. The experts are indulging in self-deception. Washington is the perpetrator of the crisis in Ukraine and intends to take over Ukraine for the precise reasons that the experts list. It is a perfect plan for destabilizing Russia and for negating Putin’s successful diplomacy in preventing US military attack on Syria and Iran.

Essentially, if Washington succeeds in Ukraine, Russia would be eliminated as a constraint on US world hegemony, Only China would remain.

I suspected that Ukraine would come to a boiling point when Putin and Russia were preoccupied with the Sochi Olympics, leaving Russia unprepared. There is little doubt that Russia is faced with a major strategic threat. What are Russia’s real options? Certainly the options do not include any good will from Washington.

Possibly, Russia could operate from the American script. If Russia has drones, Russia could use drones like Washington does and use them to assassinate the leaders of the Washington-sponsored protests. Or Russia could send in Special Forces teams to eliminate the agents who are operating against Russia. If the EU continues to support the destabilization of Ukraine, Russia could cut off oil and gas supplies to Washington’s European puppet states.

Alternatively, the Russian Army could occupy western Ukraine while arrangements are made to partition Ukraine, which until recently was part of Russia for 200 years. It is certain that the majority of residents in eastern Ukraine prefer Russia to the EU. It is even possible that the brainwashed elements in the western half might stop foaming at the mouth long enough to comprehend that being in US/EU hands means being looted as per Latvia and Greece.

I am outlining the least dangerous outcomes of the crisis that Washington and its stupid European puppet states have created, not making recommendations to Russia. The worst outcome is a dangerous war. If the Russians sit on their hands, the situation will become unbearable for them. As Ukraine moves toward NATO membership and suppression of the Russian population, the Russian government will have to attack Ukraine and overthrown the foreign regime or surrender to the Americans. The likely outcome of the audacious strategic threat with which Washington is confronting Russia would be nuclear war.

The neoconservative Victoria Nuland sits in her State Department office happily choosing the members of the next Ukrainian government. Is this US official oblivious to the risk that Washington’s meddling in the internal affairs of Ukraine and Russia could be triggering nuclear war? Are President Obama and Congress aware that there is an Assistant Secretary of State who is provoking armageddon?

Insouciant Americans are paying no attention and have no idea that a handful of neoconservative ideologues are pushing the world toward destruction.

NOTE: I have received an email from Moldova, a country bordered by Romania and Ukraine with cities on the Moldova-Ukraine border, that Moldovans are paid 30 eurosper day to pose as Ukrainian protesters. I would like to hear from readers who can confirm this report and/or provide a media source in support of this claim.

  1. There is an anarchist group in the Ukraine called the:

    “Revolutionary Confederation of Anarcho-syndicalists, Nestor Makhno” (RKAS)

    (they are Facebooked)

    According to one source:

    Nevertheless, we can say that the RKAS is an international “platformist” anarcho-party only on one level – so to speak, on the middle level. On a “grassroots” level, it is ready to recruit into its ranks all comers, regardless of their positions, if they show interest and loyalty. So in RKAS are not only people who do not intend to make and cannot make any syndicalist activity, but even are direct opponents of libertarian communism. There are also “counterculturalists”, “insurrectionalists”, adherents of “anarcho-capitalism” and even nationalists in its ranks.

    Sounds like ATS material. In any case getting someone from the group for an interview on ATS radio about what the hell is actually going on in Ukraine would be awesome. (There is a bunch of stuff on the web, but I can’t post links in the comments.)

  2. It’s ironic you posted this considering I just submitted a new introduction to the synthesists’ reply to the platform for a compilation of classical anarchist writings that will be published soon. I’m definitely more with Voline than with Makhno on this.

  3. “In any case getting someone from the group for an interview on ATS radio about what the hell is actually going on in Ukraine would be awesome.”

    That’s not a bad idea.

  4. The Leader “Samurai” has a translated post on the situation in Ukraine on tahriricn(dot)wordpress(dot)com:

    On January 19 , we have seen how Ukraine was baptized. With blood, fire, and water. The demon broke out of the bottle, the political strategy of Maidana failed. A political confrontation a la “the Orange Revolution” in 2004 turned into a riot of the most radical part of the opposition .

    It began when the Verkhovna Rada (the Parliament), with the speed of sound, issued an original set of laws. Deputies of Party of Regions, Kolesnichenko and Oleynik came out with proposal to turn quickly the “oligarchic democracy ” into a “police dictatorship “. As these would-be reformers explained their initiative to reporters: “they went out with this proposition in connection with exacerbation of the socio-political situation in Ukraine.” They didn’t want to exacerbate, and exacerbated the situation even more. For a holiday. This they succeeded brilliantly. The rulling party probably could not take a worse step. But the power, unfortunately for themselves, lost time for decisive action. People on Maidan firmed. They have already felt their strength. And they had no intention of giving up. Laws were taken against extremism on Sunday, symbolically on the Feast of the Babtism.

    And then, what an amazing coincidence, unknown enthusiasts of the opposition shouted the crowd : “Let’s go to Hrushevskoho Street! To storm the government quarter!”. And they went. No matter what Tyagnybok and Yatsenyuk yelled from the podium that, well, it’s not according to the plan and nobody should go. The protest began to get out of control of the leaders. In the evening, reinforced troops of the “Berkut” special forces took to the streets and tried to introduce the adopted laws of the government in effect. A police water cannon emerged before the protesters. I spat water from the house and stalled. Baptism has begun! Nobody expected it to be so. But the stupid laws “of Kolesnichenko and Oleynik”, signed by Yanukovych, provoked rebellion, breathed new force into the protesters, united many, who before were calmly looking at all what happened, with active protesters.

    Now the majority of the Ukrainian population is against the government. The peaceful demonstrations turned, in fact, into a street fighting, the protest got out of control of the opposition leaders. Yatseniuk and Tyagnybok repudiate violence. The militants are called provocateurs. Klichko honestly trying to stand between the ” Berkut ” and the Maidan fighters in hopes of stopping the bloodshed. But he did not succeed. The Maidan militants consist mainly of activists of so-called “Right Sector .” For me it says a lot. On the street, extreme nationalists and neo-Nazis rule. They have an unique opportunity to get a baptism of fire and tempered in battles with the police. They set the tone of “the revolutionary Maidan .” They are followed by the common people . The rightists organize, unite , throw slogans and conduct a strategy. And they get support from most citizens who came to Maidan and who, at the beginning, wanted “just” to express their dissatisfaction with the current government. In the January 19 evening, Maidan split into “the legals” and “the illegals”. Into Yatseniuk and Tyagibok running the meeting with their supporters properly at the Independence Square (Maidan), and the radicals leading the street fighting on the Hrushevskoho street.

    While the Ukrainian nationalists celebrate his finest hour with cobblestones and homemade batons, while they kidnap and beat cops, and joyfully shout ” Yolka !” in burned police buses, Russian chauvinists rub their hands and celebrate their victory. A Russian leader of the banned National Bolshevik Party, a communist and a nationalist, a Russian imperialist Limonov said that Ukraine splits and in any case it is good for Russia. Let the west of Ukraine will be taken by Europe , and the left side, with its capital in Kharkiv will become pro-Russian! Such are expectations of Russian imperialists.

    The U.S. imperialists are also in the ready position. The representative of the U.S. National Security Council at the White House Caitlin Hayden blamed the government of Ukraine for the escalation of the situation. Hayden demanded to withdraw the special forces from the center of Kiev and begin a dialogue with the opposition. Otherwise, she said, the Ukrainian authorities are waiting for sanctions. She noted that the situation has worsened due to the fact that the Ukrainian government does not recognize the legitimate grievances of the people. Interestingly, and the U.S. government, what sanctions they are waiting for ignoring the protest mood of their people? Seattle’99, Occupy Wall Street…

    The specter of civil war that will split our country into two parts – the left one and the right one with the border along the Dnieper river already soars . Lviv and Ivano -Frankivsk also already build barricades. All this I would be pleased if Maidan would be leftist. Alas, it is extremely rightist. And despite the fact that the main refrain of the protesters sounds like: “The people against the corrupt authority”, you realize that it is equally for other authority. And the authority which is not better than that against which the protests were directed.

    Events are very similar to the scenarios of “revolutions” of the recent years carried out in a foreign scenario. The Arab Spring had become for us a negative experience and a lesson to realize that empires, both of the East and of the West, are just waiting to divide Ukraine and make it their colony. Maidan is a deadlock. And it will lead only to loss of independence, a police state, no matter which variant will happen. In the variant of a pro-Western democracy, a nationalist regime, or an oligarchic monopoly…

    In all this baptism of blood one important thread was lost. What does the Ukrainian people shed blood for, and in the name of what will they possibly shed it in the future? For the interests of the criminal oligarchy ? For the neo-Nazi minority? For the European owner or for the Russian one? When will we be ready to shed blood for our own interests? For the interests of the working masses? For ourselves and not for politicians, the opposition, the bureaucracy, imperial or national interests ?

    Yes, we need a struggle! Need to overthrow the government. But no need to put instead a new one! Yes, self-organization, but in the name of self-governance! And not to give our asses to new oligarchs, even if they speak Ukrainian properly.

    There is a third way. The way of the people’s revolution. Not planned political strategies of the ruling elites but a revolution, the subject of which are self-organized workers clearly understanding their interests and clearly knowing not only what their stand against, but most importantly what they stand for! We need not a rightist Maidan, a Maidan manipulated by politicians and organizations but a new Makhnovshchina. A social revolutionary movement of the most disadvantaged sections of the people, united by a common purpose – the birth of a society without slaves and masters!

    What to do now? Collect people able to accept such logic of the struggle. Combine them. Work to create a mass movement. Inherently anarchic. Build a strong core of anarchist organization.

    Maidan will finish. And no matter how it will finish, its result will be not in favor of the people. Not in favor of the hard workers, the poor and middle strata of the students, not in favor of the miners, not in favor of the villagers, not in favor of urban slum dwellers. It will not be in favor of the majority of those who have shed blood on January 19 in Kiev. And then our next task is to prevent the next Maidan, and make every effort to start a new idea of Makhno. A new phase of the struggle is coming. Will this fight be conducted legally or underground, in a colonial country torn by the empires. or in a Nazi single state, whether the national oligarchs win or the comprador bourgeoisie of our former course – We are under the black banner of labor against capital and the state!

    And all those who agree with us – unite!
